2016 has been a fantastic year for New Orleans’ Alfred Banks. The Louisiana native was in a commercial for Volkswagen, had a small tour overseas and in the United States, and now he’s been interviewed by BBC Russia. He also tweeted about getting an email that blew him away so hopefully that has some good news coming for him in 2017.
In the interview Banks addresses how he was inspired by his older brothers to start rapping, the death of his oldest brother due to schizophrenia, and the state of black mental health. “I want to make it cool to rap about it, to bring that topic up”, Banks says around halfway through the interview.
He also dropped a new track, “Garden District”, produced by CZA that has him counting his blessings. Banks raps about all the good fortune he’s achieved in 2016 and what he has to do to keep that success going in 2017 and further. He lets us in to celebrate with him but not too much, ending the record with, “I’m optimistic used to be the total opposite/but that’s enough that’s about as personal as I can get”.
